Innovation Challenge 2021
Connecting ideas for Good
What will be the materials of tomorrow? What technologies will help simplify, again and again, the design, build, or operation of a satellite? Why not a wireless, connector-less satellite?
The OneWeb Innovation Challenge 2021 welcomes engineering, science, and creative talent, research professionals, and subject matter experts from around the world to challenge satellite technology mindsets, drive innovation, and build new business partnership opportunities.
You may already have a commercial solution in an automotive, Formula 1, aeronautical, micro-electronics, or materials science industry setting, that could shape our future in space communications. Everything is possible.
Enter to innovate in one of two challenge categories:
Industrial Partners and Student / Research Partners.
Please include your full name, email address,
and company/organisation name.
“As space offers increasingly diverse possibilities for scientific and commercial progress, this challenge is a great way to generate new ideas and invite more individuals and businesses to be a part of our growing industry." UK Space Agency Director of Growth Catherine Mealing-Jones
"ESA strongly supports innovation in the space industry to enable Europe to succeed in highly competitive global markets. We are delighted to support OneWeb's initiative to identify innovative ideas and to bring them to reality. Investing in space improves life on Earth." Elodie Viau, Director of Telecommunications and Integrated Applications at the European Space Agency
“Our space sector is thriving, and this exciting new competition by OneWeb will help it to grow even further by drawing on the best that British industry and the next generation of researchers have to offer." UK Science Minister Amanda Solloway
An Innovation Challenge open to everyone, everywhere
Get up to speed: OneWeb has a track record in the transfer of terrestrial tech from industries outside of the space sector into the field of satellite communications. We take pride in our collaborative approach to innovation.
Think small! We are offering Innovators the opportunity to redefine existing mindsets and materials in the design, production, orbit, flight and responsible de-orbiting of future satellites.
Be creative: We expect our challenge to yield new ways of thinking, using knowledge applied freely to other areas in research and industry, to develop satellites responsibly, sustainably and together.
A green space: Satellite constellations in space must keep pace with the rapid advance of smart, efficient technology on Earth if they are to fulfil a meaningful purpose that can benefit everyone.
Safe progression: We are entering a critical phase in our understanding of space as a shared, natural resource, and how best to use it for generations to come.
The opportunity: play an active part in the definition and execution of OneWeb’s satellite programme. You will join a trusted network of innovative companies with access to resources to help grow your ideas.

Student / Research partners - Invitations to attend a OneWeb / Arianespace launch, with up to five paid internships to work on OneWeb's satellite programme.
OneWeb welcomes your responses and ideas for OneWeb’s 2021 Open Innovation Challenge. All information and materials submitted to OneWeb as part of this Innovation Challenge (“Proposal(s)”), including any ideas, concepts, know-how or techniques, designs, data, drawings, comments, technology, questions, or the like, will be considered NON-CONFIDENTIAL and NON-PROPRIETARY. For this reason, we ask that you not send us any information or materials that you do not wish to be made public, including, without limitation, any confidential information. (Rules continued...)
Participants must first register to enter. There are a number of mandatory questions on the entry form that you will be required to answer, to qualify for the challenge and progress. The jury will review written proposals and select their finalists based on those they consider to be the most outstanding in terms of innovation, feasibility, and scalability.
A shortlisted group of finalists will be briefed further and invited to record a five-minute video about their company or research, describing how their proposal can create innovation in satellite communications technology. They will also be invited to take part in a live Q&A with the panel of judges.
The Challenge panel consists of members of the OneWeb team jointly chaired by Head of Space Massimiliano Ladovaz, and Senior Director of Technology Valery Gineste.
Submissions closing date: 17 May 2021
Once you have registered, you will be sent an entry form to complete. There are a number of mandatory questions you will be required to answer to qualify for the challenge and be entered for the category awards.
Shortlist and Finalists announced: 24 May 2021
OneWeb's jury will review entries and announce an Innovation Challenge shortlist. A cohort of participants will be invited to compete for one of the Innovation Challenge awards.
Finalists submissions: 24 May June to 9 June 2019
Shortlisted finalists will have two weeks in which to prepare a maximum five-minute video about their company or organisation, as well as capture how their proposal is unique. A panel of experts and mentors from OneWeb will review video submissions prior to live Q&A sessions on 15 June when finalists and jury will come face to face.
Submissions will be assessed on innovation, feasibility, and scalability, with respect to evolving satellite design, production, dispersal, orbit, and flight. The shortlisted finalists will have the opportunity to familiarize themselves more closely with OneWeb satellites. The jury will also give consideration to great founding teams who can demonstrate their deep domain expertise and abilities to scale their business globally.
OneWeb Challenge Innovators will be announced after 21 June.
